About Us

"Making a difference in someone's life, better than anyone else" is the purpose of the Visiting Homemaker Service of Hudson County (VHS). To improve the quality of life for those Hudson County neighbors who find help at home necessary, "Caring for a Better Life," is the mission.

Visiting Homemaker Service was incorporated in the State of New Jersey in 1959 as a private, non-profit, voluntary organization under the guidance of a Board of Trustees. Since that time homemaker-home health aide care, nursing supervision, and social services have been provided to a wide range of clients, which represent all age groups, diverse cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and economic levels. Visiting Homemaker Service is committed to extraordinary care and networking within the community to enable the development of strong provider relationships as a means of assuring the residents of Hudson County access to a broad spectrum of high quality health and social services. Therefore VHS is:

  • Nationally accredited under the standards of the National Home Caring Council administered by The Home Care University, a subsidiary of the National Association for Home Care in Washington, DC

  • Licensed as a health service firm by the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, Division of Consumer Affairs

  • Approved as a provider for the New Jersey Medicaid Waiver Personal Care Assistance Program

  • A member of the National Association for Home Care and Hospice, Home Care Council of New Jersey, Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce and several local community groups.
Many of our staff of Certified Home Health Aides, trained and supervised Home Care Aides, Registered Nurses, and Social Workers have over 10 years experience with VHS. The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, Board of Nursing, and Board of Social Worker Examiners issue licenses and regulations for staff competency in addition to the accreditation.

VHS carefully screens all potential employees. A written application is completed, work and personal references are checked, and personal interviews are conducted before anyone is hired. A criminal background check is also completed on all direct care staff. Additionally, VHS carries liability and bonding insurance, performs ongoing supervision, and holds in-service training to assure client protection.

Clients appreciate our value and reward us with their respect and recognize that we are a caring organization worthy of their trust. Making it possible to remain at home really does make a difference in their lives.
